What does a beginner session look like

Technical Football Tuition is the online arm of Technical Soccer Tuition.

If you cant get to TST or can't afford the extras that all players need to do if they want to accelerate their development, then at least you have access to all the information necessary in regards to building fundamental individual game functional football technique.

Fundamental Footwork Patterns and the Individual Technical Cycle of Football, which TST develops,  are looked at in detail in :

Technical Football Tuition's Online Technical Development Resource.

Session Details

Stage 1 : TST Small Group Session Snapshot

Session #1 : Developing game functional footwork (that solve simple 1v1 problems) and helping players learn about the relationship between the attacker and defender, being in possession and out of possession, and about developing players from a first principles perspective (*see below).

I will send parents / players footwork homework regularly, and the coaches will build on these or develop other footwork ideas in the sessions. The session then becomes about using these patterns / this footwork in 1v1, 2v1, 2v2, 2v3 and 3 v3 games. These games need to be all about helping players learn about the relationship between the attacker and defender, being in possession and out of possession, and about developing players from a first principles perspective (*see below). Group sizes in this session will be roughly 4-8 players, and there will be no mixing of groups, but otherwise this is very much a typical TST session. If group sizes are above 8 players will be actively looking for another coach and to split he group into 2 smaller groups.

Stage 2 : TST technical Intelligent play Development

Session #2 :  The goal of this session is to move away from individualism and towards good game functional fundamental technique, high awareness and good decision making when playing.

Again there will be 4 groups (1 per corner). Group #1 will be predominantly the younger players (2009/2008s), and then the other groups will go all the way up to the oldest players (2003s). In these sessions the objective is to develop more intelligent players at a first principles level. Players may still do footwork or weak foot work, or off the ball work, if the coach thinks it is necessary...but it is all about helping players be better in intelligence based games. [3v1s, 4v2s, 5v3s, directional rondos / games with bounce options, and constraint based games will be played - see the videos below for a snap shot of what might be done in these sessions].

The goal of this session is to move away from individualism and towards good game functional fundamental technique, high awareness and good decision making when playing. Players in these sessions will be expected to also do homework to ensure that their game functional footwork (and touch, dexterity, balance etc) is smooth, fast, and instinctive. Without this extra practice, accelerating development will be difficult. We would expect players in this session to want to do the extra practice.

Coaching from a 'First Principles Perspective' : What it means :

1. Players need to be able to solve the problems they face when playing when they have the ball. This means move the ball around their feet efficiently, effectively and instinctively, manipulate time and space when on the ball, to deal with pressure (in all its forms - face on, angled, side on, aggressive, defensive), and find a good 'release (pass, shot etc)'.
2. Players off the ball support the player on the ball : take up good positions (find the best triangle), open passing lines to receive the ball whilst also thinking ahead to what they will do on the ball (play first time, intelligent 'first touch, ball moving and release').
3. All players play with their head up, and always have a good picture of their surroundings, options and pressure so that making good decisions is easier.

If all players on a team (whether that's 2v2 or 11v11) have a good 'first principles base' then playing good technical intelligent football is possible. Playing out from the back, playing through the lines, midfield possession, getting in behind, and creating chances are all an extension of applied first principles.

Without this 'first principle' base, then players will only be able to play effectively if the technical and intelligence aspects of play are removed from the teams style of play.

Good examples of the first principals in action.

The sessions will also supported by TFTs on-line sessions.

If you haven't checked out the TFT online technical development resources and their free online sessions then take the time to do so. It is a great development resource for those those with an interest in individual game functional technique and its development.

This will give players a developmental resource that focuses on the essential fundamentals, that they can access in between sessions.

This is unique. No other development option will provide this.
