Coaching Agreement and Conditions [This term]

Coaching Agreement and Conditions

[Applicable in T2 2019 and onwards unless replaced]

Please note. I don't mean to be a pain in regards to these conditions. I am just trying to develop the right coaching culture. A professional coaching culture. I would rather have a good coach who is 100% professional, than an amazing coach you is unreliable and lacks professionalism.

[By working at TST it is assumed you have read and agree to the conditions of employment laid out below].

Your Pay :

  • Is set at the start of each term. Please askabout your hourly rate and bonus rate if you are not sure.

Invoice and ABN;

  • You are sub-contracted to coach. As a result you need to submit an Invoice at the end of each term (including your ABN). If you would rather I wrote up the invoice I can do that, but I would still need you to give me your ABN. Otherwise i cant pay you. [Accountants orders].

On going rates of pay

  • Pay is the sum of the bonus rate and base rate.
  • The lowest Base Pay for all coaches is $20 an hour once in the team [ a bonus rate is added to this], with the opportunity to increase this based on performance, and longevity in the program.
  • More experienced coaches will get paid more than the minimum base rate, but this will be determined on a case by case basis based on age, playing and coaching experience and ability.
  • Exceptional coaches who very quickly prove they they have the personality, technical ability and coaching ability to coach the TST program really well, will get paid $40 an hour (bonus plus base rate combined). Please do no expect this rate immediately. You may be a great coach but you need to learn the TST footwork methods, session layout and coaching process. It may take a couple of terms to get to this level.
  • For exceptional  coaches who have proved their continued commitment to the program over a number of terms the base+ bonus  rate would be go up to $50 / hour. This is the top pay rate.
  • Assistant coaches is more like an intern position. Expenses will be as follows. $15 base rate plus $5 bonus rate per session (not an hour).

Bonus Pay

  • Reliability, presentation and punctuality of coaches is critical to making the TST small group program a success. No matter how good the program is, coaches who aren't reliable or punctuality will tarnish the perception and reputation of the program.
  • So if a coach gets to every session during the term then there will be bonus per hour for the whole term.
  • The most senior coaches will get a base rate  plus s a bonus rate (which could go up to $50 hour) in reward for a very high level of professionalism. To get this top rate ($50/hour) coaches need to be 100% reliable and punctual, as well as coach at an exceptional level.
  • The base rate / bonus rate combination is determined on a case by case basic. More experienced coaches will get a higher bonus rate, but this will be determined on a case by case basis based on age, playing level, general coaching experience and longevity at TST.

What affects the Bonus

  • If a coach knows they will miss a session or 2 (max 2) during the term, then if this is made known at the start of the term it will not affect the bonus. Any last minute sessions that are missed however means that coaches bonus  for all the sessions for the term will be withheld*.

    • *The withheld rule: A withheld bonus will be paid, but it will paid a full term in arrears and only if the coach is still currently coaching and will continue to coach in the program.
    • If the coach drops out of a session at late notice again then the bonus gets rolled over to the next term  (2 terms in arrears) etc.
  • If a coach misses a session because they are simply too sick to coach -  this will not affect the bonus. (This should be once a year in reality) but please avoid a last minute drop out.
  • Any other reasons for missing the session will be judged on a case by case basis, but as a general rule dropping out in the week prior to the session will result in the non payment (until the following term) of the accrued bonus up to the missed session.
  • These are conditions are in place to ensure coaches put their TST commitments above other commitments.
  • Your bonus pay also assumes you arrive a little early to set up so you can start on time [and that you help pack up at the end of the sessions although this isn't as important as arriving early]. Players should not be still waiting for the coach to set up 5 minutes into the session.
  • The bonus pay for a term is conditional on continuing to coach for TST in the following term. Coaches who leave the program without sufficient notice (a full terms notice) lose any bonus's not yet paid. That is; The bonus is conditional on continuing to coach in the program or giving a full terms notice that you are moving on.

Also note:

  • Coaches are paid in arrears [see below] and coaches must submit an invoice (inc ABN) at the end of term.
  • If an ABN is not provided then coaches will not be paid (Accountants orders).
  • New coaches: Unless otherwise agreed, the first terms Pay is paid in the middle of the second Term – Week 15*. If you cant guarantee you will work for at least 15 weeks then do not get involved. If this is an issue then, we can work out something that works, but due to the extra admin and risk to the program the pay rate will be less than it would otherwise be. Once established as a coach we would hop all coaches get paid in the same way.

After this :

  • Base rate pay is always paid at the end of the holidays following the end of the term.
  • The bonus rate of pay is paid at the end of week 5 in the following term [unless the coach drops out of a session within this 5 week period at the last minute. If this occurs, then the bonus will not be paid.
  • If you need to negotiate different terms then it is possible but note TST needs coaches who not only commit to a term, but then also coach for the whole of that term.
  • An up to date Working with Children check needs to also be submitted. Without this you will not get paid.
  • Any coach who is employed on a different basis (that is gets paid weekly, or only gets paid a base rate) will be seen as a temporary employee. It is the programs preference that all coaches get paid a base rate and bonus rate combination and get paid in arrears.

Giving Notice:

  • Coaches must give (in an email) at least 5 weeks notice if they can no longer coach, and once committed to a term need to be available throughout that term. [Dropping out half way through a term is very problematic.Your full pay is conditional on coaching for a full term unless otherwise agreed.]
  • If you know you wont be able to coach for the full term please make this known at the start of term. Failure to do this, will affect both the base pay and the bonus pay.
  • Coaches who fail to give 5 weeks notice during the term will not be paid for the sessions they have done in that term, unless they have an a exceptional reason for leaving the program.
  • If coaches give 5 weeks notice (that is give notice in week 5 of the previous term) that they will not be coaching in the next term then the base pay will be unaffected.
  • Coaches who leave mid way through a term (regardless of the 5 weeks notice) potentially put the program under huge pressure if another coach cant be found to replace them. Unless you have a really good reason for not continuing to coach during a term, then TST reserves the right to pay not pay you for the sessions you did do during the affected term.

If you are sick during the week :

  • Please do not let me know on a Saturday morning that you have been sick all week and you thought you would be OK to coach, but in fact can't. If you are sick in the week, then let me know so I can at least try to get a coach on stand by just in case you don't recover.

General Uniform Rules :

  • In general terms it is all black (although do not wear other academy uniform), or another colour if it has a TST logo on it. If you wear something that falls outside these rules then you will be docked $5 from your pay on the day.

Specific Uniform Rules :

  • If you are given a black Nike uniform by TST then you will need to pay a deposit (an amount will be held back from your first terms pay that covers the full replacement cost of the uniform – in the region of $300). This deposit gets paid back to you when you return the uniform.

The full Nike uniform:

  • Pants/shorts/t-shirt/(mid layer or hoodie)/jacket costs over $350. The deposit is $50 per item, and so the amount held will be depend on how many items you have. If you get given clothing which isn't Nike – then the deposit is $25 per item. You can chop and change items based on what you think you need, but make sure you always have black clothing to cover any eventuality. (Ie; If you have Nike shorts and t-shirt but its cold so you wear pants/jacket then the pants/jacket you use instead, must be black).

Punctuality :

  • Please be ready to start on time. It takes 5 minutes to set up so arriving 5 minutes early is the latest you should arrive. Groups should never be waiting for you. Arriving late does not reflect well on you or the program. If you would like to get paid extra for setting up and packing up then let me know. If you need a break – use the small side games to grab a few minutes break (as long as there is cover for all the games).
  • You get paid to arrive 10 minutes early. So there is no excuse for being late.

Packing up ;

  • Packing up is a job that would take 1 person 45 minutes to do, but gets done in 5 minutes if all coaches pitch in.
  • You get paid to stay an extra 15 minutes to help pack up. So there is no excuse to not help pack up.

Equipment pack up rules : Each pitch has :

  • 8 balls per bag (no more) so it is easy to count and check to see if a ball is lost.
  • Max 4 weights per bag.
    • More than this breaks the bags.
  • 4 Goals per blue bag (Very important it is 4, as it helps setting up next week).
    • Take care folding the goals.
    • If this is done incorrectly it buckles them and they then never fold well again.
  • 1 Cone Bag: Colour code cones as much as possible.
    • There should be 6 blue cone bags, so don't squash all the cones into 2 bags.

Preparation :

  • Every week an email about session content gets sent out. You must read it all and make sure that you could coach any session based on this. You must know all FFPs (and main tech games) and be able to coach them. The topic (older advanced players) is deliberately broad brush, as I want you to own your sessions (within the TST framework) as much as possible, and so I need you to be creative and come up with great exercises that both you and the players will enjoy. You will achieve this better if you control what and how you run the session (as long as it is within the TST framework).

TST session framework :

  • Firstly , there are about 8 different TST levels which all have a slightly different format.
  • The youngest players (U5/U6/U7) have no format other than coaching in way that these young players will enjoy. Games, ball mastery, Games, Ball mastery, Games, Ball mastery.
  • Otherwise In general;
    • 30 minutes on footwork (that leads into) :
    • 30 mins on tech games (that leads into) :
    • 30 mins on SSGs.
  • All players must be involved at all times, unless
    • there is a rotation which means 1 player has a rest (5 players in a 3v1 exercise is ok) or 1 team in a 3 team winner stays 2v2 comp is ok..
  • See Coaches starter pack for full details
