Footwork levels

All TST coaches need to be comfortable doing and coaching the FFPs patterns.

All players in the footwork sessions (2.15 onwards) need to be
learning, developing and perfecting the:

Add Value

Key notes on an Footwork based TST session;
Remember TST is about adding value over and above what players get at team training. So we try to avoid things that a team coach can do. Out sessions shouldn't look like a team training session. With this in mind, never leave a player practicing without being watched. The feedback on every thing they do is essential. This is definitely something a team coach can't do. That is : give quality and consistent individual feedback and then be able to continuously follow up on that feedback by watching for and assessing the progress.

However, we still need players constantly active, working hard and engage.

So don't focus so much on watching one player if other players have to be standing still. Find the way to achieve both.

Ball Moving levels

Level 1 :  ball mastery:

Check that you are good with all the FFPs, as you need to be very good at these before you can teach them to players.

Fundamental Footwork Patterns : Ball Mastery recap

If players cant do these first 9 patterns - don't do anything else. If they can, then use the lists below the videos to mix up the footwork.

If you were to pick only 5 FFP to work on pick these:

  • Inside Inside
  • Inside switch Outside
  • Inside step Outside
  • Drab Back v (any)
  • Turn (any)

Obviously you need to make the cone work
  • interesting and
  • challenge, as well as add in
  • intensity and getting the
  • head off the ball.

For advanced Players Do the ball mastery (as in the videos) as the warm up for the the patterns used during main part of the session.

Level 2 : Repetition of single FFPs  using cones or a drag back into FFPs

This LINK  is great for practicing simple but fundamental patterns that can done with intensity.

[[ Introduce it, practice it, improve it, race it , Move on !! ]].

This repetition can be technical and easily done with intensity.

Level 2 cone set ups

Drag Back U
Zig-cones

Players at this level may need constant changes within the sessions

  • Ball Mastery
  • Tech Game
  • Drag Back U
  • Tech game
  • Drag Back U - intensity
  • Tech game
Player may lose motivation if they have to do footwork for too long.

Level 3 : Repetition of combinations of FFPs using cones

Level 3 cone set ups : when multiple patterns are used in one exercise

Level 4 : Repetition of combinations of FFPs and add in Passes using cones

With advanced footwork  : Try to do a number of things this term.
  1. Try to offer a picture of pressure so that players get the feeling of where the defender might be for the pattern to have game functionality
  2. Add in a pass whenever possible after each pattern (so the players go through the process of :  pressure, footwork to get away from pressure and to find the space, head up, hit the pass, get the ball back)
  3. Build this up more and more as the term develops and aim to add in angles, body shape, checking etc as the term develops. But this will take time to build up.
Take a look at this link for the video; You do not need to do this but as long at meets similar objectives.
these are quite advanced players to some degree - and i add in intensity.

II P IO fwd T SwVi DD P+P (with pressure)

key

  • I = inside
  • I = pass
  • O = Outside
  • Sw = Switch
  • Vi = drag back V into an Inside
  • DD = dush dush = IswO = inside switch outside
  • P+P = pass & press

Tech game

Players with footwork that still needs a lot of work

Play tech games where footwork is the focus

Having said this - The mantra is always

Use footwork to find the space to hit the pass

Players with good footwork need games that development intelligence

2v2 with moving goals is the go to tech game for players with ok footwork

Players who still need a lot of work on footwork need to play games that focus more on footwork

Here the manipulation of space both on and off the ball to find and hit the pass becomes the key learning of objective of the tech games. Footwork is just a tool in this process.
