Ball Mastery exercises that that do more harm than good

There are a couple of ball mastery exercises which i don't rate which all coaches do. My question would be why are they done when there are game functional exercises that achieve the same thing? A couple of examples are ; -

  • The Ding Dong (repetitive 1 touch insides insides) - BANNED

  • The Tap dance (repetitive alternating 1 touch taps on top of the ball) - BANNED

Maybe they can be done once to just get a few basics nailed but should never be done for so long that they become ingrained movement patterns which players then take into games

TST players develop FFPs

Get to grips with how TST looks at Football technique 'Initially'; It starts with Footowrk.

TECHNIQUE STARTS WITH FOOTWORK

Fundamental Footwork Patterns

Get up to speed with FFPs and session formats.

RECAP; The general format to a session is;

  • Isolated Fundamental Footwork Patterns (DBV, ADBV, DBFB, I, O, II, DD IO, OI)  practice (with a focus on intense touch repetition in exercise that indicates success or failure)

  • Tech games* which puts the footwork practiced under pressure. (kids love games do we have devote a decent part of the session to this otherwise kids disengage and stop learning)

Can players leave the session with their legs and lungs burning. As well as having a huge amount of game functional touches they have had a conditioning work out too.

Key to Fundamental Footwork Pattern [FFPs] (videos links are on page 12)

  • SFV [shuffle] – Same foot drag back V shuffle (Drag back and with the same foot immediately move the ball out of the body and shuffle. END. Switch feet)

  • ADBV [step] – Alternate drag back V step (Drag back and with the other foot immediately move the ball out of the body and step. END. Use same foot Switch the pattern around)

  • DBFB [sh]- drag back flick behind shuffle (Drag back and with the same foot immediately move the ball accoss the back of the body and shuffle. END. Switch feet)

  • I [sh] - Inside across the body and shuffle. END.  (Repeat the other way)

  • O [sh] - Outside across the body and shuffle. END.  (Repeat the other way)

  • II [step] - Inside across the body followed immediately into an inside with the other foot (stop touch or a forward touch) followed by 1 step. END. Repeat the other way

  • DD [step] - Inside chop touch  followed immediately by an outside with the other foot that gets the ball out of the body, followed by 1 step. END. Repeat the other way

  • I [st] O - Inside chop touch  followed immediately by an outside touch with the same foot that gets the ball out of the body, followed by a shuffle to switch feet. END. Repeat the other way

  • O [st] I - Outside touch out of the body followed immediately by 1 step, followed immediately by an inside touch with the same foot (that stops the ball or moves it forward or it coud be a drag back and turn) , followed by a shuffle to switch feet. END. Repeat the other way

Do you need to do anything that isn't one of these. Probably not.

The numbered FFPs ( 1-11) are the starting point. Make sure all these are covered over a term term.

Key
*COD - Change of direction
*DBV - Drag Back Vs [V shaped drags]
*FB - Flick Behind
*Dush Dush - Inside of outside foot to outside of inside foot
*st - step (this will keep the ball on the same foot)
*sh - shuffle (ie: 2 steps after the touch - this will switch the ball to the other foot)
*3st - 3 steps between touches
(note, if foot touches the ball and then goes to the floor - this is not a step even though it looks like one)
